You asked a really good question – you want to know how long it takes for HCG levels to go back to an undetectable level after pregnancy. Ultimately, this depends at the point at which the pregnancy ended. Take miscarriages for example – HCG concentrations are highest around 8-11 weeks gestation, where they peak and then come back down and kind of stay in a lower level for the rest of the pregnancy, so if a woman were to miscarry between 8 to 11 weeks, her HCG levels will start higher and it may take longer for them to go back to an undetectable level. Or if a woman carries her baby to full term and then delivers, then it’s not going to take as long for HCG levels to become undetectable. So research has shown that there’s a very wide range of how long it takes – anywhere from 7 days to 60 days. This can have a variety of implications. Say you miscarry and then you took a pregnancy test just a few short weeks later – you may still get a positive result and it may be due to the previous pregnancy. Or if you just had a baby and you took a pregnancy test a month later and you got a positive result, there’s a possibility that it could be due to a pregnancy, but it’s hard to know for sure. So it’s always best to call your doctor if you have specific questions or concerns about it and, based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they can give you tailored information and advice about it.
