HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. It is a hormone released during pregnancy. It rises when you become pregnant, and is detectable in the blood and urine, and is the basis of pregnancy testing.

When HCG is given to non-pregnant people on a very-low calorie diet, it helps them to lose more weight and burn a greater percentage of fat than with dieting alone. The body has THREE types of fat: structural fat, reserve fat, and abnormal fat (tummy, hips, thighs, etc). HCG helps your body burn 1000-4000 calories of stored ABNORMAL fat a day! Since you are getting calories from your stored fat, you only need to consume 500 calories a day. And you don’t feel hungry! If you were to only eat 500 calories a day without HCG, you would mainly slow your metabolism, begin to burn muscle, and start burning your reserve and structural fat NOT YOUR ABNORMAL FAT.

The HCG diet involves taking HCG once a day, preferably as an injection, but also available as sublingual (under the tongue) drops. You eat a VERY-LOW calorie diet, 500 calories a day. You can have unlimited water, tea, and coffee. Twice a day you will eat a small meal consisting of 3.5 ounces of lean protein, a fruit, a vegetable, and melba toast. You can also spread out the items in each meal. For example, fruit for breakfast; chicken, melba toast, and lettuce for lunch; fish, melba toast, and asparagus for dinner; and a fruit as an after dinner snack.

The HCG helps to suppress hunger, keeps your metabolism up, and helps to burn ABNORMAL FAT DEPOSITS for energy. You should never do such a low calorie diet without medical supervision or without HCG. The actions and benefits of the HCG diet is controversial, with the medical community split about 50/50 over its benefits. What I can tell you, is when patients in my office do the diet with injection HCG, they lose between 15-30 pounds per cycle. This is substantially more weight loss than I would expect with diet alone.

My theory on why HCG allows this success is as follows. From a cave-man perspective, if you ate 500 calories a day, that would signal that there was a shortage of food, and your body would go into famine mode. This triggers a slow down in metabolism to match food intake and prevent starvation. The exception would be, if you were pregnant, you wouldn’t want to slow your metabolism, and it would be a great time to burn your fat that you had been saving for a special occasion. That would allow you to not only survive the “pregnancy famine”, but to ensure adequate nutrition for the growing fetus, and survival of the species.

Be careful where you get your HCG. The FDA has cracked down on on-line HCG sales. Most online HCG comes from the urine of pregnant women in countries like India. Injections are the best route for HCG administration and are only available with a prescription.
